Week 3 Picks
Georgia St @ Memphis -28 (o/u 60.5)
Memphis was shut down last week by the high winds more than the Navy defense. This is a Georgia St defense that ranks 110 in defensive efficiency and I think the explosive Memphis offense gets right at home
Pick: Memphis -27.5
Score: Memphis 48 Georgia St 14
Hawaii @ Army -6.5 (o/u 62)
At first glance I’m not sure how anyone stops each other in this game. Hawaii has the 129th ranked defensive efficiency while Army’s D comes in at 109. Conversely, both are top 50 offenses with Hawaii in particular moving the ball with ease. The only concern I have here is Hawaii’s body clock will be at 6 am their time. I look for the ‘Bow’s 11th ranked offense in yards per play (YPP) to over come that.
Pick: Over 63
Score: Army 41 Hawaii 38
Rutgers @ Kansas -2.5 (o/u 44.5)
This one is pretty simple. Kansas is favored against a Power Five team for the first time since 2009. I don’t think people realize how truly terrible Central Michigan is so Kansas is getting some love for their win over the Chips last week. I make Rutgers a favorite in this game so I gobbled up the 3 points early in the week.
Pick: Rutgers +3
Score: Rutgers 23 Kansas 9
Troy @ Nebraska -10.5 (o/u 57.5)
I made this game Nebraska -9 while Collin Wilson makes it -7.5. Nebraska Freshman QB Adrian Martinez is the big wild card here for the Huskers as he is Questionable with a leg injury. I think Troy is a good football team that struggled in their first game against a very good Boise team. If true freshman walk-on Andrew Bunch is forced to start at QB for the Huskers, I expect this line to move closer to a touchdown.
Pick: Troy +11.5
Score: Nebraska 33 Troy 27
Kent State @ Penn State -35 (o/u 64.5)
After watching my beloved Illini struggle with Kent State in week 1, the Golden Flashes have had my attention. First year HC Sean Lewis, a Dino Babers disciple, has the #FlashFast mantra going as they are 13th in the country in plays per game. I expect the Penn State defense to play more like they did in week 1 after a spirited effort against rival Pitt last week.
Pick: Over 64.5
Score: Penn State 51 Kent State 21
Vanderbilt @ Notre Dame -13.5 (o/u 52)
I jumped on the Irish at 14 early in the week as I had this game Notre Dame -19.5. Both of these defenses are very stout but I don’t think this Vandy team is ready to step up in competition after an easy first two weeks. Remember, we thought Vandy was ready for big competition last year after a 3-0 start. Things did not go well as Alabama demolished them 59-0 in Nashville. I see this one being low scoring and I’m not sure the Commodores score more than 10.
Pick: Notre Dame -14, Under 53
Score: Notre Dame 31 Vanderbilt 10
