Rise and Grind Daily Fantasy: 4/9/19

Each weekday morning I’ll be previewing the DFS slate for the day. I’ll give my picks to click each day so you can cash. When playing DFS there are many things to consider before lineups lock. You’ll want to make sure each player is actually in the lineup that day so it’s important to check a couple hours before game time. I’ll try and get the Rise and Grind post updated each day as lineups come out. The other thing to seriously consider is the weather. It’s imperative to follow Kevin Roth (@KevinRothWx) on Twitter or at Roto Grinders.  He gives great updates on the weather each and every day. Again, this blog will be updated throughout the day as lineups and weather forecasts come out. For simplicity, I’ll be using DraftKings prices when I reference a player’s cost.

 Main Slate: 10 Games

My DFS strategy involves picking at least one of the top 5 pitchers for each slate. Pitchers score more points and are more consistent on a day-to-day basis than hitters. Even the best hitters can go hitless on a given day. It’s also important to check the Vegas lines to see which team is favored to win. Wins and innings pitched are the most important parts of DFS.

Premium options:

  • Jacob deGrom $11,600

  • Gerrit Cole $10,500

  • Freddy Peralta $9,900

  • Stephen Strasburg $9,700

  • Aaron Nola $9,400

  • Joey Lucchesi $9,200

  • Ross Stripling $9,100

Medium CosT options:

  • Zack Greinke $8,900

  • German Marquez $8,800

  • Brett Anderson $8,000

  • Marco Gonzalez $7,600

  • Jake Junis $7,200

Bargain Bin options:

  • Jonathan Loaisiga $6,900

  • Derek Holland $6,800

  • Dakota Hudson $6,600

  • Kyle Gibson $6,500

  • Max Fried $6,400

  • Mike Minor $6,300

  • Matt Harvey $6,000

  • John Means $4,500

Jacob deGrom is costly today but he’s well worth it. Justin Verlander didn’t have a great day against the Yankees yesterday but Gerrit Cole should be able to post a solid amount of points. I’m staying far away from Freddy Peralta again even though it burned me last time. Strasburg, Nola, and Greinke are all good values for today. I’m saying no thanks to Joey Lucchesi, Ross Stripling, and especially German Marquez. The value in this slate comes with Kyle Gibson, Derek Holland, Jake Junis, Matt Harvey, and Dakota Hudson. I’m going to be using a deGrom/Nola pairing today because pitching is king in DFS. If I wanted an ace/value pair I’d pick deGrom/Holland.

Lineup placement. That’s the Holy Grail for me when it comes to hitters in DFS. You want hitters that are batting in the top half of the order so they get more chances to score points. The score projections used come from SabreSim’s free tool that can be found on Fangraphs.

 Highest Scorers:

  • Freddie Freeman, 1B $5,100

  • Matt Chapman, 3B $4,600

  • Ronald Acuña Jr, OF $5,200

  • Christian Yelich, OF $5,300

  • Trevor Story, SS $5,100

5 VAlue plays:

  • Ender Inciarte, OF $4,300

  • Charlie Blackmon, OF $5,000

  • Trevor Story, SS $5,100

  • Justin Bour, 1B $3,600

  • Luis Urias, 2B/SS $3,200

Philly, Baltimore, and New York have some rain but should play without any issues. Winds blowing out in Detroit and in, in Boston. Plan accordingly.

Lineup Updates

Catcher, as usual, is bereft of much tangible value tonight. I’m going to play Martin Maldonado ($2,900) because he’s the cheapest option and facing a lefty. Willians Astudillo ($3,400) is hitting 3rd for the Twins but he has to face Jacob deGrom. Every other catcher besides Sanchez ($4,300) and Realmuto ($4,400) are hitting 7th or lower.

Justin Bour ($3,600) finally hit a homer last night! I’ve unfortunately been using him all season but he finally rewarded me. I’m going back to the well tonight as he should be in his customary 3 spot. Frank Schwindel ($3,800) and Hunter Dozier ($3,600) aren’t bad options batting 5th and 6th respectively against a lefty. Brandon Belt ($3,700) is also worth a look tonight.

I’m finding Luis Urias ($3,200) as one of the only values tonight at 2B. He batted leadoff last night. Unfortunately, he’s not playing tonight. Wilmer Flores ($4,300) is facing a lefty and batting 3rd which is always nice. I’d rather have Ketel Marte ($4,200) batting 2nd though. I like Robbie Cano ($3,900) tonight.

I love both Travis Shaw ($4,200) and Mike Moustakas ($4,200) tonight in Anaheim but I prefer the former. Josh Fuentes ($4,100) is batting 6th against a lefty but he’s too expensive for me.

Once again, I’m in on Andrelton Simmons ($3,400) who should be hitting cleanup for the Angels tonight. Dansby Swanson ($4,100) and Alex Bregman ($4,700) are also solid values.

In the outfield I’m targeting my normal Kole Calhoun ($3,400) share as well as the red hot Nick Markakis ($4,000) in Coors. Yonathan Daza ($2,900) is leading off tonight for the Rockies against a lefty and has HUGE value at his price. Kris Davis ($5,400) might be worth the high price tag against a lefty in Coors. The same goes for Christian Yelich ($5,300) and Ronald Acuña Jr ($5,200). Jesse Winker ($4,200), Joc Pederson ($4,200), Andrew McCutchen ($4,100), Adam Jones ($4,000), Adam Eaton ($3,900), and Brandon Nimmo ($3,900) leading off tonight. I prefer Cutch of that group. Jorge Soler ($3,900) is facing a lefty!
