Each weekday morning I’ll be previewing the DFS slate for the day. I’ll give my picks to click each day so you can cash. When playing DFS there are many things to consider before lineups lock. You’ll want to make sure each player is actually in the lineup that day so it’s important to check a couple hours before game time. I’ll try and get the Rise and Grind post updated each day as lineups come out. The other thing to seriously consider is the weather. It’s imperative to follow Kevin Roth (@KevinRothWx) on Twitter or at Roto Grinders.  He gives great updates on the weather each and every day. Again, this blog will be updated throughout the day as lineups and weather forecasts come out. For simplicity, I’ll be using DraftKings prices when I reference a player’s cost.

 Main Slate: 8 Games

Pitchers

My DFS strategy involves picking at least one of the top 5 pitchers for each slate. Pitchers score more points and are more consistent on a day-to-day basis than hitters. Even the best hitters can go hitless on a given day. It’s also important to check the Vegas lines to see which team is favored to win. Wins and innings pitched are the most important parts of DFS.

Premium options:

  • Colin McHugh $9,500

  • Shane Bieber $9,300

  • Rick Porcello $9,100

  • Kevin Gausman $9,000

Medium CosT options:

  • Jose Quintana $8,400

  • Frankie Montas $8,000

  • Nick Pivetta $7,700

  • Joe Musgrove $7,600

  • Felix Peña $7,400

  • Jake Odorizzi $7,100

  • Lance Lynn $7,000

Bargain Bin options:

  • Zack Godley $6,900

  • Brandon Woodruff $6,800

  • Sonny Gray $6,700

  • Pablo López $6,600

  • Trent Thornton $6,200

With no true aces on the hill today, we’ll need to be careful with who we choose to lead our DFS teams. While Oakland has been impressive to start the season, Collin McHugh should be able to have a good day. I don’t mind a Shane Bieber play but he doesn’t have the most juice to squeeze. Rick Porcello is a hard pass for me. I’m not a fan of Kevin Gausman in season long leagues but you have to give him a look against Miami. Nick Pivetta has huge value today and would be a must own if not for one certain thing (keep reading). I don’t think you can use Jose Quintana today. Milwaukee just mashes, man. Do yourself a favor and skip Frankie Montas today. I don’t think things will go well for him against the Astros. The same goes for Lance Lynn and Felix Peña. Gotta stay away tonight. I really like Joe Musgrove from the medium cost tier. Sonny Gray has a soft landing matchup after a rough first start. I’m not sure if I have it in me to start Brandon Woodruff tonight against the Cubs. The Cubs and Brewers have the highest non-Coors Vegas total of the day so there should be some runs scored. Zack Godley is a good bargain from the bin tonight even against the defending champion Red Sox. I’m going to start Trent Thornton in a season long league tonight and he’s a pretty good value in DFS if you want to go really cheap.

 Hitters

Lineup placement. That’s the Holy Grail for me when it comes to hitters in DFS. You want hitters that are batting in the top half of the order so they get more chances to score points. The score projections used come from SabreSim’s free tool that can be found on Fangraphs.

 Highest Scorers:

  • Mike Trout, OF $5,600

  • Mookie Betts, OF $5,400

  • Ronald Acuña Jr, OF $5,100

  • Freddie Freeman, 1B $5,200

  • Alex Bregman, 3B $4,800

5 VAlue plays:

  • Kole Calhoun, OF $3,900

  • Nomar Mazara, OF $4,000

  • Socrates Brito, OF $3,100

  • Asdrubal Cabrera, 3B $4,000

  • Rougned Odor, 2B $4,300

Weather

It looks like we’re going to get a PPD in Philly tonight, squashing the Nick Pivetta value I’m mentioned before. Pittsburgh is going to be a little wet and might start late. It’s a little risky to play pitchers in this one because there could be an in-game delay. Slight rain chances in Anaheim and Atlanta but they should be fine.

Lineup Updates

Socraties Brito is leading off for the Blue Jays and you better believe his in my lineup for $3,100. Cervelli is back in the 3 spot for the Pirates making him more valuable than the $3,700 he costs. Jorge Alfaro also has a little value batting 5th. As usual I’m on Justin Bour in the 3 spot tonight. He’s off to a slow start but he’ll break through soon. I also like Mitch Moreland and Neil Walker hitting 3rd and Josh Bell batting cleanup. Adam Frazier and Ben Zobrist are batting leadoff? Check please. I like Eduardo Escobar tonight against Rick Porcello. I’m paying top dollar for Bregman today. The same goes for Mookie Betts. Until the prices on Choo and Kole Calhoun go up, I’m going to keep owning them. George Springer is going to hit a dinger tonight. Facts only.
