Rise and Grind Daily Fantasy: 4/2/19

Each weekday morning I’ll be previewing the DFS slate for the day. I’ll give my picks to click each day so you can cash. When playing DFS there are many things to consider before lineups lock. You’ll want to make sure each player is actually in the lineup that day so it’s important to check a couple hours before game time. I’ll try and get the Rise and Grind post updated each day as lineups come out. The other thing to seriously consider is the weather. It’s imperative to follow Kevin Roth (@KevinRothWx) on Twitter or at Roto Grinders.  He gives great updates on the weather each and every day. Again, this blog will be updated throughout the day as lineups and weather forecasts come out. For simplicity, I’ll be using DraftKings prices when I reference a player’s cost.

 Main Slate: 10 Games

My DFS strategy involves picking at least one of the top 5 pitchers for each slate. Pitchers score more points and are more consistent on a day-to-day basis than hitters. Even the best hitters can go hitless on a given day. It’s also important to check the Vegas lines to see which team is favored to win. Wins and innings pitched are the most important parts of DFS.

Premium options:

  • Max Scherzer $11,800

  • Justin Verlander $11,500

  • Chris Sale $10,500

  • Jose Berríos $9,700

  • Blake Snell $9,500

  • Hyun-Jin Ryu $9,300

Medium CosT options:

  • Madison Bumgarner $8,900

  • Marcus Stroman $8,300

  • Kyle Freeland $7,900

  • Zack Greinke $7,600

  • Eric Lauer $8,100

  • Brad Keller $7,000

Bargain Bin options:

  • Mike Fiers $6,800

  • Trevor Cahill $6,600

  • Zach Efflin $6,300

  • Marco Gonzalez $5,900

  • Jason Vargas $5,600

  • Jose Ureña $5,500

  • Shelby Miller $4,900

  • Andrew Cashner $4,200

Some really interesting salaries today for pitchers. Scherzer is a stud and should be impervious to Bryce Harper and the stacked Phillies lineup but there are better values out there. First, I’m all about Blake Snell for $9,500 against the road Rockies. Verlander and Berríos are properly priced so there isn’t a ton of value. Still, they should score plenty of points. I’m avoiding Chris Sale today against the A’s. That’s a team that has plenty of righty mashers and I’m worried about his velocity in his first start. Zack Greinke is a good bet to bounce back against the Padres in San Diego. You won’t find me with MadBum at that price against this Dodgers team. On Opening Day, Marcus Stroman’s salary was $6,900. One good start later and he’s up to $8,300. I know it’s the Orioles but I can’t pay that much for Stroman until I see him do it more. Cahill and Vargas are really good values if you want to go cheap on pitching. I’m not touching the other Bargain Bin pitchers.

Lineup placement. That’s the Holy Grail for me when it comes to hitters in DFS. You want hitters that are batting in the top half of the order so they get more chances to score points. The score projections used come from SabreSim’s free tool that can be found on Fangraphs.

 Highest Scorers:

  • Alex Bregman, 3B $5,000

  • Mookie Betts, OF $5,500

  • Jose Altuve, 2B $5,200

  • George Springer, OF $4,800

  • Mike Trout, OF $5,600

5 VAlue plays:

  • Brandon Nimmo, OF $3,900

  • Zack Cozart, 3B $3,700

  • Robinson Cano, 2B $3,900

  • Billy McKinney, 1B/OF $3,800

  • Evan Longoria, 3B $3,500

There’s rain in the forecast in DC and a PPD is a possibility. You’ll need to keep an eye on that situation if you’re planning on playing any Nats or Phils. There’s a rain chance in Oakland but it shouldn’t cause a PPD. Everything else is clear.

Lineup Updates

As usual catcher is a wasteland today. I like Lucroy batting 5th vs a lefty and Omar Narvaez is he’s in the lineup. Yandy Diaz is batting leadoff against lefty Kyle Freeland which has me VERY intrigued. I’m a big Garrett Hampson fan but I’m not going to use him today against Blake Snell. Robby Cano is a big value today in the 3-hole against Jose Ureña. Starlin Castro went yard yesterday against a lefty and he could do it again today batting cleanup. Zack Cozart is leading off against Marco Gonzalez and Jeff McNeil is hitting second against Ureña, both good plays. Jonathan Villar and Andrelton Simmons are both batting 3rd. I love Brandon Nimmo today leading off as usual. Tommy Pham is pricey but I’m fading Kyle Freeland and Pham crushes lefties. Adam Jones has been hot and he’s leading off against a lefty tonight for just $3,800. You could do worse.
