Rise and Grind Daily Fantasy: 4/16/19

Each weekday morning I’m previewing the DFS slate for the day. I’ll give my picks to click each day so you can cash. When playing DFS there are many things to consider before lineups lock. You’ll want to make sure each player is actually in the lineup that day so it’s important to check a couple hours before game time. I’ll try and get the Rise and Grind post updated each day as lineups come out. The other thing to seriously consider is the weather. It’s imperative to follow Kevin Roth (@KevinRothWx) on Twitter or at Roto Grinders.  He gives great updates on the weather each and every day. Again, this blog will be updated throughout the day as lineups and weather forecasts come out. For simplicity, I’ll be using DraftKings prices when I reference a player’s cost.

Last Night’s Results

The below lineup scored a total of 148.05 points, good enough to place in the cash contests I entered last night. Darvish managed to score 23.35 which helped offset Kikuchi’s rough night. Goldy, Moustakas, and Gallo all homered. Trout and Mazara had 10+ points. Overall a very good night.

P- Darvish $7,800 P- Kikuchi $7,700 C- Molina $3,400 1B- Goldschmidt $4,300 2B- Moustakas $4,300 3B- Carpenter $3,800 SS- Seager $4,000 OF- Trout $5,600 OF- Gallo $4,900 OF- Mazara $4,200

Main Slate: 13 Games

Nothing notable

My DFS strategy involves picking at least one of the top 5 pitchers for each slate. Pitchers score more points and are more consistent on a day-to-day basis than hitters. Even the best hitters can go hitless on a given day. It’s also important to check the Vegas lines to see which team is favored to win. Wins and innings pitched are the most important parts of DFS.

Premium options:

  • Tyler Glasnow $10,600

  • Stephen Strasburg $10,300

  • Robbie Ray $9,900

  • Jack Flaherty $9,200

  • Kenta Maeda $9,000

Medium CosT options:

  • Collin McHugh $8,800

  • Jon Gray $8,700

  • Shane Bieber $8,600

  • Jose Quintana $8,400

  • Jaime Barria $8,300

  • Stephen Matz $8,100

  • Max Fried $8,000

  • Nick Margevicius $7,900

  • Brandon Woodruff $7,500

  • Tyler Mahle $7,400

  • Aaron Sanchez $7,300

  • Nick Pivetta $7,200

  • Dylan Bundy $7,100

  • Mike Minor $7,000

Bargain Bin options:

  • Pablo López $6,900

  • Mike Leake $6,700

  • Derek Rodriguez $6,600

  • Kyle Gibson $6,400

  • Jorge López $6,200

  • Marco Estrada $6,100

  • Reynaldo López $6,000

Who would have thought two years ago that Tyler Glasnow would be the most expensive arm for DFS? I’m not using him tonight but he’s got big strikeout upside. I like Strasburg quite a bit tonight versus the punchless Giants. I’m staying far, far away from Jack Flaherty tonight. The Cardinals just can’t get the Brewers out. Robbie Ray against ATL isn’t a great matchup for him. There are better options that Maeda tonight.

McHugh, Quintana, and Bieber are all very good values tonight. I’ll likely be using one or two of them. Jon Gray is fine but the Padres are much better than we thought. Both Nick Pivetta and Margevicius have some value tonight but do you really want to spend money on Pivetta?

Three pitchers from the Bargain Bin are getting interest from me. Pablo and Reynaldo López are nice values tonight as well as Kyle Gibson. I think I’m going with Reynaldo of the trio. I’m not considering any others from this section.

I’m planning on using a pairing or Quintana and Reynaldo tonight.

Lineup placement. That’s the Holy Grail for me when it comes to hitters in DFS. You want hitters that are batting in the top half of the order so they get more chances to score points. The score projections used come from SabreSim’s free tool that can be found on Fangraphs.

 Highest Scorers:

  • Austin Meadows, OF $5,000

  • Cody Bellinger, 1B/OF $5,600

  • Joey Gallo, OF $4,800

  • Jose Altuve, 2B $4,800

  • Pete Alonso, 1B $4,900

5 VAlue plays:

  • Chris Davis, 1B $2.100

  • Mike Moustakas, 2B/3B $4,000

  • Brian Dozier, 2B $3,700

  • A.J. Pollack, OF $3,800

  • Joc Pederson, OF $4,800

Lineup Updates

Catcher is actually not that bad today somehow. My choice came down to Wilson Ramos ($3,900) batting 5th and Kurt Suzuki ($3,700) hitting 6th. I’m opting for Suzuki to save some money as they are about equal in their projected production.

Ji-Man Choi ($3,600) is hitting third against Dylan “Dinger” Bundy. I originally had Travis Shaw ($3,600) in my lineup but he’s batting sixth so I’m opting for Choi. Brandon Belt ($3,600) is also a good value but he’s facing a much tough pitcher than Choi. Albert Pujols ($3,800) is another nice option facing a lefty in a great hitters park.

Brian Dozier ($3,700) hitting 2nd is my pick at 2B tonight. I also like Moustakas ($4,000) and Robbie Cano ($3,700). Ozzie Albeis is facing a lefty and leading off but it’s a tough one (Robbie Ray). Starlin Castro ($3,300) is facing a lefty as well if you want to go ultra cheap.

Jose Ramirez ($4,200) finally broke out last night in Seattle. He’s facing Mike Leake tonight so I’m betting on that hot streak continuing. I gave some thought to Matt Carpenter ($4,400), Justin Turner ($4,100), and Josh Donaldson ($4,000) as well.

Shortstop tonight came down to Corey Seager ($4,200) and Jorge Polanco ($4,300). Both are batting second against questionable pitchers but I’m going to roll with Seager. Brandon Crawford ($2,900) is hitting 5th and has value as a super cheap option.

There’s nothing quite like an elite outfield party. I’m once again playing Trout ($5,600). I’m going to use Bellinger ($5,600) and Pederson ($4,800) as well, assuming they are in the line up. My back ups are Joey Gallo ($4,800), Christian Yelich ($5,400), and Andrew McCutchen ($4,600$). If you’re looking for a super cheap outfielder look no further than Stephen Duggar ($3,100) leading off tonight for the Giants.

My Lineup

P- Quintana $8,400 P- López $6,000 C- Suzuki $3,700 1B- Choi $3,600 2B- Dozier $3,700 3B- Rendon $5,400 SS- Simmons $3,700 OF- Trout $5,700 OF- Gallo $4,800 OF- Pederson $4,800
